What Are Lots in the Bible?
Many modern readers of the Bible have difficulty understanding what lots were, but the Bible isn’t the only source for this important concept. In ancient times, lots were likely sticks or flat stones, and they were often made into dice. The idea of using lots to settle disputes is reminiscent of how people today flip a coin to decide what to do. The Bible uses lots throughout the book of Exodus, for example.
Casting lots to determine God’s will
Casting lots to determine God’s will is an ancient practice, but it’s not always a good idea. The Bible says that casting lots is not a good idea. You shouldn’t be casting a lot just to know what God’s will is, because divination is a sin. God hates this practice and would never approve. Instead, casting lots was used to find God’s answer to a problem or question that was bothering you.
In the Old Testament, the Jews used this practice, and it was also used by Christian disciples prior to Pentecost. In these cases, the lots were made up of sticks or stones with symbols, and they were thrown into a small area. This practice is mentioned in Proverbs 16:33.
This method was used for many reasons, but the most common was to divide land. It was also used to determine who would be priest in the Temple. In addition to land division, casting lots was used to determine who would bring God’s wrath. A lot would also be used to determine a scapegoat, which was the punishment for a sin.
Casting lots to determine God’s will isn’t something you’d do in today’s society. In the Old Testament, people were called upon to act on the direction of the Holy Spirit. After Pentecost, however, the believers ceased to use their own outward witnesses and relied on the Holy Spirit alone.
Casting lots was also used to choose the scapegoat or sacrifice goat. It was a common practice among pagans before God was born. Many of the pagan gods also used this method. Some even believe that God copied pagan rituals! Ultimately, the Bible does not condemn casting lots. However, it doesn’t teach us to use it for bad intentions.
Many of the Old Testament accounts refer to casting lots as a way to determine the will of God. Ancient peoples used stones to represent the different outcomes. Biblical scripture does not give details about this procedure, but Kitz suggests that the Israelites placed their marked stones in a vessel and then shook the container to determine the deciding stone.
Dividing land
The Torah uses two methods for dividing land. First, it lists names of tribes. It then divides land according to these names. This gives large groups a larger share and small tribes a smaller one. It also assigns a specific portion to each tribe based on enrollment.
In the Old Testament, the standard for land divisions was established in the law of Moses. The standard was based on the areas that Moses directed Israel to possess in Deuteronomy 20:16-17. In addition, the law of Moses gave Israel possession of lands across the Jordan in passages like Numbers 32:33-42.
Then, Israel gathered at Shiloh. This was where the tabernacle (tent of meeting) was located. There, they could worship God and offer sacrifices. But, there were seven tribes left that had not yet received their inheritances. Fortunately, Joshua, a leader of the Israelites, recognized God’s will and divided the land.
Secondly, the Bible emphasizes the value of neighborly love. Nations that divide the Land of Israel will be judged by the Lord Almighty. That is why it’s important to love our neighbors and not make decisions based on political calculations. Just like in the Bible, we should be careful not to do what we’d like to do when it comes to land division. We should consider the consequences of our decisions.
Identifying sacrifices
The Bible contains a number of references to sacrifices and the types of animals used in them. Often, the name of a sacrifice is associated with a particular person. People in different positions brought different sacrifices, and those of higher rank brought more valuable offerings. The common man, however, brought an offering that was much more modest. This consisted of a female goat or lamb, two turtledoves or pigeons, and tenth of an ephah of fine flour. It’s important to note that the sin offering did not cover sins that were unknowingly committed, as this would cut a person off from God.
Hearing God’s guidance
If you’re faced with a tough decision, you can learn to recognize God’s voice in the Bible and respond to it accordingly. You can start by praying about it. If the thought keeps coming back, test it against Scripture to ensure that it’s from God. You can also ask other believers to affirm your intuitions.
When seeking guidance from God, we should start with the presumption of love and invite Him to speak to us. By doing this, we show God that we have nothing to hide and will give Him our complete attention. We can compare this to paying close attention to our loved ones. When we’re busy checking our phones every few seconds, we don’t feel like we’re listening to them and won’t hear all the things they’re saying. The Bible says that God’s voice can be heard when you give your attention to Him.
The Bible is full of stories that reveal God’s truth and prompt us to obey Him. These promptings are often from the Holy Spirit, which prompts us to do the right thing. Sometimes it’s just a feeling of peace, or a thought that rushes in from somewhere else. Other times, it’s an internal prompting to tell other people about Jesus.
