What Does Regeneration Mean in the Bible?
The word “regeneration” in the Bible has several different meanings. The first is the literal sense, which means to become “alive” or “spiritual.” The other is the eschatological sense, which refers to a future process in which all humanity is spiritually regenerated. This latter sense is in line with the general interpretation of other biblical texts. Work of the Holy Spirit

The regeneration process is a divine work in the heart that grants us the immediate gift of God’s spiritual life. The Holy Spirit’s sanctifying work in the heart is a sovereign act of God. Only God can do this, and we cannot do it ourselves. We must receive the Holy Spirit in order to be regenerated.
The New Testament provides evidence of the work of the Holy Spirit in regeneration. Baptism is the first stage of regeneration. The Holy Spirit works after baptism in order to sanctify the believer.
